Black History Month

The celebration of Black History was initiated by Carter G. Woodson, Ph.D. in 1926. It began as a one week observance to bring national recognition to the contributions Black Americans made in American history. The tradition began during the second week in February to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas whom Woodson felt significantly shaped the lives of African Americans for the better. It evolved into a month-long celebration in the1960s.

Dr. Woodson is also responsible for establishing the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (presently called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915. A year later he founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History born from a longing to weave Blacks into the fabric of American history.

For your consideration, an Afro-centric bibliography and information on local Black History Month events are listed below.

Day of Prayer

March 3rd, 2003, (03-03-03) has been established as a global day of prayer and fasting. In scripture, the number 3 represents the Holy Trinity. Since there is a strong possibility that our country may be going to war soon, all Christians throughout the world are requested to pray for peace on this day. Faith is the doorway that all miracles come through, and prayer is the key that unlocks the door. Please share this information with your loved ones for a collective and powerful appeal for Divine intervention.

The Black church has always been our refuge in times of trouble. However, some have argued that the Church has abdicated its responsibility on the most critical issues of our time. So what does the Black church have to say about gang violence? About HIV and AIDS? About the US policy toward Iraq? It is now time for all of America to hear what is on the hearts and minds of our most trusted and well known spiritual leaders.

Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough. The cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. And a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Please share this information with as many people as possible; it could save their lives!
