Welcome to the "Black Catholic Videos for Religious Education and Evangelization". I would like to take this occasion to invite you to establish your own "Black Catholic Video Library" for your family, parish or organization. In this library, you will find over a dozen videos have been produced to bridge the gap of understanding between the Black experience and the Roman Catholic tradition.
The "Black Catholic Videos for Religious Education and Evangelization" library contains over a dozen television productions that have aired on television all over this country and the world! (In fact, we have our SEARCH series in French and our gospel musical on the life of St. Martin de Porres is in Swahili for East African nations!).
Even though February is Black History Month --- remember that November is BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH. Every school and parish should have some type of celebration. At the least, video and discussion groups can be convened. But we must celebrate and REJOICE that 'we've come this far by faith!'. And don't forget February. This Black History month let us put forth the uncountable contributions of the 200 million Catholics of African descent throughout the world.

Search for a Black Christian Heritage
This four (4) part series of 30 minutes documentaries produced for international and ecumenical audiences includes the following productions.
Egypt the Missing Hyphen of the Judeo-Christian Heritage centers on the Egyptian contributions to the Christian faith we practice today. The program portrays the Egyptians as a Black race. It shows the evidence of the link between the bible and Egyptians writing and elements of Baptism that began in Egypt: as well as Christian symbols borrowed from Egyptian culture. Scholars who are featured represent Catholic, Methodists and Episcopalian scholars.
The Black People's Presence in the Bible focuses on the Black personalities listed in the Bible and the contacts of the Chosen people with African peoples. It also features the explanation of the races in the Bible and the historical misunderstanding of the Bible and Slavery.
The African Contributions to Christianity is a survey of the hundreds of saints recognized by the Church from Africa, principally the Nile Valley. It focuses on Sts. Augustine and Monics, Felicity and Perpetua and many others. Besides the ancient Church is bring one up to date with saints such as Sts. Bendict the Moor, Martin de Porres and the Martyrs of Uganda.
Black Roman Catholicism Today surveys the nations throughout the world that have the largest numbers of Catholics of African descent. It begins with the history of the Church among people of African descent and follows the slave trade in charting the origins of Black Catholics in the New World. The program culminates with the estimation of the growth of Black Catholics worldwide forming the largest Christian organization for people of African descent.
In God's Service
Black Priests is a half hour program profiling three (3) priest from around the country: Fr. Charles Burns, SVD of Los Angeles: Fr. Ray East of Washington, DC; and Fr. Ferdinand Cheri of New Orleans. The program includes gospel choirs, a history of Black priesthood in the country and a dramatic presentation on decision-making and the priesthood.
Black Sisters is a 30 minute program profiling three (3) sisters and their ministry from around the country: Sr. Elizabeth Harries, HVM of Detroit; Sr. Jane Nesmith, SBS of New Orleans; and Sr. Juanita Shealey, SCJ of Cleveland, Ohio. The program includes renditions of two spirituals by the late Sr. Thea Bowman; as well as a history of Black sisters in the country and a dramatic presentation on values and the sisterhood.
Black Brothers is a half hour program profiling three (3) brothers from throughout the nation: Bro. Cyprian Rowe, FMS of Baltimore, Bro. Hugh Henderson, CPPS of Detroit and Bro. Bob Smith, OFM Cap of Milwaukee. The program includes gospel choirs, a biography of St. Martin De Porres and a dramatic presentation on what makes a Brother.
Black Deacons is a 30 minute program profiling three (3) deacons and their ministry from throughout the nation: Deacon Thomas White of San Antonio, Texas; Deacon John Algee of Toledo, Ohio; and Deacon Charles Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio. Like the above programs, it includes gospel choirs, a biography on Pierre Toussaint and a dramatic presentation on an invitation to become a Deacon.
Other Productions:
Saint! The Gospel Musical on the Life of St. Martin De Porres
is a hour length musical set on a multi-ethnic Catholic college campus. The plot centers around a class presenting the life of St. Martin De Porres to gospel music. The conflict of the drama centers around the class' need to create a project for graduation. The production, a dramatic review of St. Martin set in a way to introduce him to a new generation.
The Beatification of Blessed Katherine Drexel
is a documentary on the events surrounding the first step of sainthood for the foundress of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters. These religious woman worked exclusively with Native and Black Americans. The production covers the ceremony in Rome and Footage on the life and times of Blessed Katherine Drexel.
Rejoice! Futuring Black Catholic Worship
is an hour long international documentary on Black Worship around the world for the more than 200 million Catholics of African descent. The production centers on the efforts of Catholics of African descent to bring their culture into worship in North America, South America, Europe and Africa.
Preaching to Save the World
features Fr. James Goode, OFM, Ph.D. leading a spirit-filled revival at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Detroit, Michigan. This half hour program demonstrates the power of one of the nation's most powerful preachers, and the response of Black community to the preaching event.
A Basilica for Africa
captures the historic dedication of the tallest Church in the world, Our Lady of Peace Basilica in the West African country of the Ivory Coast. This half hour production tells the story of the vision and commitment of the President of the Ivory, Felix Houphet-Boigny; and Pope John Paul II acceptance of the gift of this basilica for the Catholic Church.
