Background to Movement

The original purpose of Building Bridges in Black and Brown (B4) was to bring together Blacks and Hispanics\Latinos in the Catholic Church. The Church represented faith-based organizations and was viewed as a "safe area" to initiate this timely dialogue. The Church as a "safe area" would be free from many of the fears that the two groups might encounter with interaction in other institutions in the general society. Since that initial beginning, the "building of bridges" has grown steadily. In articulating the role of the Church, the model has become beneficial for other Church denominations, educational institutions and community organizations. The model and processes have been captured in a publication entitled, People of the Pyramids: The Dialogue Between the African American and Hispanic/Latino Communities.
